Silent concert headphones: live music with mixing-desk sound
Silent concert headphones send the live mix straight to every listener, so bands and pianists can play in places where amplified sound is not an option.

A silent concert turns the usual logic upside down. Instead of filling a space with speakers, the sound engineer sends the mix directly to wireless headphones. Each listener hears the band with studio clarity, at their own volume, while the room around stays almost silent. Chapels, cloisters, museums, gardens and city rooftops become possible venues even when amplified music is not allowed.
We know this format well. With the Yamaha Silent Experience a piano concert became an experience in headphones, reaching places where a traditional concert could not go. The same technology works for acoustic sets, jazz nights, DJ-musician collaborations and immersive listening sessions. The musicians play live, the audience listens in headphones, and you can use a second channel for commentary or translation.
Why choose silent concert headphones
Studio-quality sound
Every listener receives the mix from the desk, clear and balanced, wherever they stand.
Impossible venues made possible
Historic buildings, museums and gardens can host live music without amplification.
Personal volume
Each listener sets their own level, which makes concerts more comfortable for every age.
Extra channels
Add a channel for commentary, translation or an alternative mix.
No noise for neighbours
Outdoor concerts in residential areas become much easier to plan.
Bass that holds up
Super Power Bass® tuning keeps the low end that wireless systems usually lose.
How a silent concert works
Connect the mixing desk
The sound engineer sends the main mix to a transmitter with XLR. Other channels can carry separate mixes.
Hand out headphones
Listeners receive headphones at the entrance and choose the channel, guided by the LED colours.
Play live
The band performs; monitors on stage can stay low, and the audience hears every detail.
Setting up headphones for a concert
For a seated concert, plan one headphone per listener plus spares. For a standing audience in a courtyard of 300 people, 300 headphones and a TX-350 are a typical starting point.
- Headphone model: the SX-553 Evolution HiFi is ideal for detailed listening; the SX-809 brings stronger bass for electronic sets.
- Transmitters: one per channel; the TX-500 for large outdoor spaces.
- Indicative prices: up to 200 headphones €850–1,000, up to 500 €1,700–2,000.
- Help choosing: compare the models on the silent disco headphones page.
Tips for a successful silent concert
- Soundcheck in headphones: the engineer should check the mix on a headphone, not only on the monitors.
- Quiet stage: keep stage volume low so the room stays calm for the people listening.
- Explain the format: a short introduction at the start helps the audience settle in.
- Seated or standing: both work; for seated concerts, place headphones on the seats before doors open.
- Second channel: use it for a commentary by the artist or for translation in international audiences.

Silent concerts are also a strong format for cultural programming. Museums can host musicians among the collections, gardens can welcome an orchestra at sunset, and city rooftops can offer intimate sets above the traffic. Because the sound reaches each listener directly, small audiences enjoy the same detail as large ones, and older or sensitive listeners can keep the volume exactly where they like it. If the concert is part of a wider event, see our page on silent disco festivals.

Is the sound good enough for classical music?
Yes. The SX-553 Evolution HiFi is designed for detailed, natural listening, and radio transmission has no delay.
Can we offer translation on a second channel?
Yes. One channel can carry the concert and another a commentary or a translation.
How far can listeners be from the transmitter?
Up to 500 metres in open space, with a stable signal thanks to dual PLL frequency stabilisation.
Do you supply the sound engineer?
For larger events we can provide technicians for our system; the sound engineering of the performance stays with your team.
