What is a silent disco and how does it work?

A silent disco, also called a silent party or headphone party, is a party where the music reaches only the guests' wireless headphones. Here is how it works, step by step.

In short

The party you can hear only in headphones

At a silent disco there are no speakers pointed at the dance floor. Every guest wears wireless headphones that receive the music by radio from a transmitter connected to the DJ. Inside the party it is loud and clear; outside, you only hear people singing and laughing.

The headphones have three channels: up to three DJs, or three genres, can play at the same time. One button switches channel and the headphone LED changes colour, so you can see at a glance who is listening to what.

That is why silent disco has become the way to party where loud music is not allowed: historic centres, beaches, rooftops, villas, museums and town squares.

How it works

From the DJ booth to the headphone, in three steps

1

The source

The DJ connects the mixer to the transmitter with an XLR or RCA cable. Instead of a DJ you can use a laptop or a phone with a playlist.

2

The transmitter

The transmitter sends the music by radio frequency (RF) to every headphone in the party area: a stable, delay-free transmission up to 500 metres.

3

The headphone

Each guest switches on, picks one of the three channels and sets the volume. The lithium battery lasts up to 10 hours.

Why it works

Six reasons to choose a silent disco

No noise complaints

The music plays only in the headphones: ideal near homes, hotels, historic centres and protected areas.

Your own volume

Everyone sets their own level: those who want it loud get it loud, sensitive ears stay comfortable.

Three genres, one floor

Three channels at once: 80s, house and reggaeton in the same room, with no arguments.

Talk without shouting

Slide the headphones down to your neck to chat: the party gets more social, not less.

Visual effect

The LEDs light the floor in the colour of each channel: you can see at a glance who is listening to what.

No closing time

Where loud music must stop at midnight, the headphone party can carry on.

FAQ

Silent disco: the most common questions

Are silent disco, silent party and headphone party the same thing?

Yes: silent disco (or silentdisco), silent party, headphone party and quiet clubbing are different names for the same party. "Silent party" is often used for private parties, "silent disco" for clubs and festivals, but the technology is the same.

Is there any delay between the music and the headphones?

No. Radio frequency transmission is instant and every headphone receives the music at the same moment, unlike Bluetooth.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. The transmitter and the headphones talk by radio: no Wi-Fi, app or mobile data needed.

How long does the headphone battery last?

Up to 10 hours on a full charge, which takes about 4 hours. The headphones arrive charged and chargers are in the kit.

Can I use a playlist instead of a DJ?

Yes: connect a laptop, a tablet or a phone to the transmitter. With three channels you can prepare three different playlists.

How much does a silent disco cost?

It depends on the number of headphones: as a guide, a single event with 50 headphones costs €250–400. All price bands are in the price guide.
